Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Aim-

For this project, we have to perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided using ansys workbench.

Objective-

For the tension test, displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed. We will need to find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen and attach appropriate images to show your results.

For the torsion test, we will need to displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree. Find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen and to attach images to show results.

Procedure-

• We have to first start as new project in the ansys workbench Select Explicit Dynamics and select the proper material for the test specimen.
• Here material has been specified in the project so we will select the material as mentioned.

• Now we have to import the model for that right click on the geometry tab and hit import>>then select the file from saved location and hit ok.

• Assign the material Steel1006 to test specimen.

Coordinate System-

Tension test

• Select the bigger cylinder and create the new cordinate system make sure that the newly created system is in tact with global one.

• Similarly do it for other side as well.

Torsion Test-

• For this rest rest above coordinate is there with one more cordinate as cylindrical one.

Mesh-

Tension Test-

• First right click on the mesh>>insert>>method>>select whole component and select type as tetrahedrons.

• Now as per created coodinate systems select the faces and generate mesh, mesh>>insert>>sizing>>select sphere of influence and select new coordinates face wise and keep radius as 22 and element size as 3mm.

• now generate the mesh.

Torsion Test-

• rest aove mesh is going to be same except we have to create fine mesh near neck portion and near conical portions.
• For conical portion, mesh>>insert>>sizing select faces and element size as 1.5mm.

• Now for neck region, mesh>>right click>>sizing>>sphere of influence, global cordinate system, radius as 8mm and element size as 1mm.

• Now generate the mesh.

Analysis Setting-

• Here we will give time step as 1e-3, refer below snap.

Tension Test-

• We have to now apply displacement load to spcimen to move it by 18mm.

• Fixed load to other end.

Torsion test-

• We have to now apply angular displacement load to spcimen to twisting it by 1200deg.
• Here select cylindrical coordinate system for result evaluation.

• Fixed load to other end.

Solution Setting-

• Here we have to define total deformation, to do so right click solution>>insert>>deformation>>Total.
• Now for stress right click on the solution>>insert>>stresses>>equivalent (von-Mises).
• For temperature, after solution went through deformation and stress, click on solution and click on worshit from home tab, scroll down and in that search for temperature and right click>>user defined result.

Conclusion-

• So from above results of tension test we can observe that the necking occurs in specimen when it surpasses the max. yield strength limit and enters the permanent plastic deformation stage.
• Similarly in torsion test we can observe that crack occurs at center when max. shear stress value surpasses the value of 0.57times of yield strength of material.
• So as per the requirement and loading condition we must have to select the material wisely including all parameters.
